| | | Some Lichen from Scotland Whilst on holiday in Scotland during November 2008 I came across several interesting Lichen. I should state that they are all interesting!
Any help in identification is much appreciated.

| | | Re: Some Lichen from Scotland Hi John, you really need AlanS for these but I'll have a go .....
1. Cladonia portentosa
4. Cladonia, but not sure of species
5. Cladonia gracilis with the red apothecia of a different Cladonia sp to the left
6. Left possibly Cladonia chlorophaea, right Cladonia portentosa
7. Icmadophila ericetorum
8. The brown lobes bottom right and top left could be Cornicularia normoerica, but its not one I've come across. Stumped on the one in the centre! |

Many thanks for this. I really need to get a good book on Lichens!

| | | Re: Some Lichen from Scotland Hi John,
Sorry for delayed response on these.
1. Agree with Jenny - C. portentosa. Some thalli with small, brown apothecia - not nearly so common in this fertile state.
2&3. No firm identity without microscope work, but strong probability this is Lecidea lithophila.
4. Wow, great photo! At least 5 Cladonias in here. The predominant species is C. polydactyla, but also with C. diversa, C. furcata, C. fimbriata and probably C. ochrochlora in the photo.
5. Sorry to disagree with Jenny here, but the Cladonia is uniformly farinose-sorediate, which rules out C. gracilis. It is C. subulata. Note the characteristic branching pattern. No comment on the one with red apothecia.
6. Not sure about the one on the left - C. chlorophaea is a good suggestion from Jenny but I wouldn't entirely rule out C. ochrochlora. However it does look very like C. chlorophaea at bottom centre, so the left hand one is most likely this too. Agree also with C. portentosa for the main subject.
7. Agree with Jenny, Icmadophila ericetorum.
8. I am slightly cautious with this one, as I have near identical photographs of material I have not checked yet, but I am fairly sure it is Trapelia glebulosa (aka T.involuta). The apothecia are quite dark when dry, with distinct white margins, but when wet they swell to become very convex and hide the margins, and become this distinctive pinkish-red-brown colour. Agree with Jenny that it is fringed by Cornicularia normoerica, but it is a species I also have never seen! (Summer research plans should take me to just the right area though!)
