| | | help with identification pink mass on lichen Hi
Can anyone indentify the pink blobs in these images?
I've occasaionally found them on Hawthorn braches, typically laden with P.tenella and X.parietina (for completeness, I live in Oxfordshire).
The blobs are pretty amorphous (no sign of any structures such as asci etc.).
A slime mould perhaps?
thanks

The pink blobs are the conidia of Illosporiopsis christiansenii, a fungal parasite of Physcia and other lichens. Illosporiopsis christiansenii (images of British lichenicolous fungi)

Many thanks indeed, though I fear this thread may have come in an amusing full circle!!
I put the question up many months ago when I was genuinely confused as to the identity of the pink blobs.
Whilst awaiting a reply I found a very helpful site authored one Alan Silverdale...based on the lead that gave me I did further investigation myself and wrote it up my results on my own site my own site ....which Ken, you gratifyingly found and referenced in a reply to someone else... before finally, pointing out here said 3rd party reply to me.
How did we all manage before the internet! |

Anyhow, we agree on the fungus!

Sincere apologies. My carelessness - please don't read anything into it!
(I've corrected my mistake on my blog also)
best

Henry | No problem, indeed, since I am "Silverdale" to the Field Studies Council, the Natural History Book Service, and British Wildlife, perhaps it is me who is wrong?
