| | | Cladonia and parmelina query The first of these I'm fairly sure of, and then it goes downhill from there ......!
1. Parmelina tiliacea?
2. Either Ephebe lanata or Pseudephebe pubescens? When I found it I thought it appeared less-flat than the Ephebe that occurs on a lot of rocks round here and wondered whether its Pseudephebe?
3. A brief deterioration into crustose, K-, C+ yellow. On a deciduous tree trunk, but I didn't note the species ....
I'm not sure whether there are one or two species below or if Q2 (Cladonia 1 photo) is being parasitised?
Unfortunately I muddled the labelling up but each of the three are shown separately below, though the numbers don't correspond........
Cladonia Q1, K+ yellowish, C-, KC-
Cladonia Q2, K-, C-, KC- but then greenish
Cladonia Q3, I lost the bit I brought back to test, but I'm thinking its possibly a fresher version of Cladonia 2? |

| | | Re: Cladonia and parmelina query Hi Jenny,
1. Hmmmm....
I have to say I disagree. I think this is Parmelina pastillifera. The isidia look black and solid, as in that species, and also the lobe tips are slightly turned down and brownish (as in true Hypotrachyna revoluta), so I feel fairly confident it is NOT P. tiliacea. Sorry.
2. Yes, it looks like Pseudephebe pubescens to me. Habitat looks wrong for Ephebe, and it is too coarse to be Cystocoleus or Racodium.
3. Hmm, a reminder that now I have the new handbook, I no longer have an excuse not to start looking at my own Lecanora samples accumulated over the last year or two. (Though the Lecanora saligna group in the handbook is already out of date!)
I don't have any immediate suggestion for yours.
As for your Cladoniae, I agree Q1 might be parasitised. I don't have any suggestion at present.
Q2 and Q3 I think are just C. diversa, more squamulose than usual but within the range of variation of the species.

| | | Re: Cladonia and parmelina query Thanks Alan.
The Cladonia Q2 had me rather confused as I got a KC- then greenish rather than the KC+ yellow that Dobson gives for C. diversa?
Now armed (finally) with the new lichen book .... do you know if there is anywhere that I can get a list of all the species that the names have been changed for as I'll have to do a bit of website re-naming? |

| | | Re: Cladonia and parmelina query Jenny, looking at number 3 again, my first action would to be to see if it has septate spores.
It has a Lecania cyrtella look about it, rather than Lecanora that I was guilty of assuming.
The apothecia of Lecania cyrtella vary quite a lot in colour.

| Another reminder of how much I need a microscope!
It tested C+ yellow which doesn't seem to be mentioned for Lecania species? I got a green reaction with K and KC...... | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
