| | | Lichen ID Help Please Found all these today, and would be very grateful for any identification help.
(Go easy on me - I'm clutching at straws here).
No.1 - No idea at all.
No.2 - Cladonia sp.?
No.3 - Another Cladonia?
No.4 - Is this Xanthoria parietina
No.5 - Usnea sp. (possibly hirta)?
No.6 - Evernia prunastri?
No.7 - I thought this one would be easy - It's all the way up one side of many tree trunks.
No.1.................No.2
No.3...........................No.4............... ...........No.5...........................No.6.... ......................No.7
Regards

| | | Re: Lichen ID Help Please Hi Mike, fingers crossed and I'll give a couple of them a go .....
1. came across one like that yesterday and I'm still struggling!
2. Yes Cladonia - what was it on for ID clues?
3. Cladonia ochrochlora or Cladonia coniocraea are two possiblities.......
4. Yes
5. Ramalina farinacea - the commonest Ramalina and with a flatter thallus (them strappy bits!) than Usnea's
6. Yes
7. I think that one is an algae rather than a lichen - steering clear of them at the moment! |

Thanks for your response.
No.2 was on the stones of the lower part of a dry stone wall.

| | | Re: Lichen ID Help Please Hi Mike,
1. This is Porpidia tuberculosa in its common, asexually reproducing state - small, round soralia producing pale- to dark-blue-grey soredia all over the upper surface. Often very common on base-poor rocks.
2. Probably Cladonia diversa (the commonest red-fruited Cladonia to produce large cups, slightly yellowish green, very variable).
3. I think this is Cladonia coniocraea, though a bit malformed. C. glauca is another possibility, but that is very grey and I would expect longitudinal splits along at least some of the podetia to be visible in the photograph (photos going up on my own site sometime soon). So C. coniocraea is most likely.
4. Yes, Xanthoria parietina.
5. I agree with Jenny - Ramalina farinacea.
6. Yes, Evernia prunastri.
7. As Chris says, this is the green (!) alga, Trentepohlia. Looks like true T. aurea.
