| | Where Best To Post Mosses? Hi all,
I've got a couple of moss pics that I'd like to get identified if poss.
Would the general consensus be that moss queries should be lumped in with the lichens?, or should they be posted in the Wild Flowers, Trees & Plants Forums?
I think best with Lichens, (Or even better if there could be a separate sub-forum for mosses), but it would be good to have feedback from WAB's regular contributors so that we're all (hopefully) in agreement.
I'd be grateful for your votes on the poll.
Regards
Mike. NOTE - the poll is anonymous, and is multi-choice, so you can tick more than one box if you want to.

Interesting question that, Mike |

Will have a quick look at your mosses.

Moss and liverworts in their own sub-forum alongside the lichen sub-forum would be great (now where did all my moss photos go........ ) |

| | | Re: Where Best To Post Mosses? Mosses are plants.
Fungi are not, so they rightly have their own forum, and lichens are rightly a subforum under fungi.
So wherever they go, mosses and liverworts do NOT belong here, and to post them here perpetuates the myth that lichens are "lower plants". Also, anyone actually looking for bryophytes in these forums is hardly likely to look under fungi.
There may well be a case to create a bryophytes subforum under the plants, but please, not here.
There is, it is true, a "plant" aspect to lichens in that they contain algae, but there again, humans keep cattle and that doesn't mean we are cows.

| | | Re: Where Best To Post Mosses? Second everything AlanS says!
Lichens are (predominantly) peculiar ascos: mosses & other bryophytes are something else again. At the microscopic level lichenologists and mycologists use similar techniques. Bryology involves a very different set of skills and knowledge.

Alan | I totally agree with you Alan. I'll get this sorted with Stu.

| | | Re: Where Best To Post Mosses? Hi Poschiavanus,
A couple of weeks ago I PM'd StuDH regarding a bryophyte pteridophyte sub-forum, and he is looking into the possibilities.
However, if it does happen, Stu advises it is likely that the sub-forum will be named "Non-Flowering Plants" so as not to be offputting to beginners, and with the intention of keeping sub-forums to a minimum.
I think that it would be a sub-forum within the Wildflowers/plants/trees forum, and am assuming that the lichen sub-forum would remain separate.
Regards
