| | | Bryoria or embarrassing mistake?    The photos below are either of Bryoria fuscesens or I've gone and made a very embarrassing mistaken identification of some polypody roots.....
Photographed on upland acidic rock, Cladonia, Cetraria, Sphaerophorus on the rock above ..... and Polypody! |

However, my vote is for roots I'm afraid. It cannot be Bryoria fuscescens as that has 'isotonic' branching (effectively forking, rather than narrow side branches coming off a main axis, as is visible here). This doesn't rule out other Bryoria or Alectoria species, but none is very likely.
