a satisfactory succes, will be trying again, the asci and paraphyses were all
hyaline do you use stains.

| | | Re: lichen for id please Lovely: a good find. I think graphids are pretty neat, but I'm hopeless at IDing them. Hazel is an excellent substrate: whole woods of the stuff on the west coast of Scotland with BAP fungi as well.
I think there is a picture of Opegrapha in the Gallery taken by me but IDed by people who knew what they were doing.
All my section cutting was on a course, but I didn't use stains in general, although tried an iodine solution on an Aipolia species (Melzers is no good for lichens - too strong - use Lugols). Certainly the big issue is getting a thin enough section, but I was surprised at how quickly I achieved this.

neither is it for inoperculate ascomycetes, here also Lugol is first and only choice! A pity that DENNIS wasn't aware of that in his time!
best regards,
Andreas

Cheers J.P. | Vey nice. Definitely C. floerkeana. The apothecia join together to form rings, or often like the pair of bright red lips that features at the start (or at the end, or somewhere) of the Rocky Horror Picture Show (well known cult film).
Known as 'Bengal Matches' or, in America, as 'Gritty British Soldiers'.
Easily confused with C. polydactyla (which has much larger, incised basal squamules and usually come cups present) and other Cladonias with bright red apothecia, but this is good, typical material.

Cheers J.P. | I would call this a small state of Xanthoria parietina, not X. polycarpa. It is difficult to find a reliable macroscopic distinction (lobe width does not help on small twigs), but the arrangement of the apothecia here, set amongst the thallus lobes, is typical of X. parietina, as is the precise thallus colour, whereas in X. polycarpa the apothecia are more clustered and hide the thallus.
