| | | Lichen I saw this ( http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...mage-8613.html) in the Gallery the other day and it seemed to be similar to something I found last autumn (see attached thumbnail). Is it the same? If not, does anyone have any idea what it is. I know nothing about lichen.

John | Thanks for confirming this, John.
This afternoon I found more lichen (see below). I thought that the first may also be Evernia prunastri, but possibly in an earlier stage? Am I right? It was growing on an oak tree. The second was growing on a twig (not sure what kind). Any idea what this is? Sorry, I know my photos aren't the best.
I am beginning to realise that trying to catalogue everything in my garden is a mammoth task. I had not even thought about lichens until now!

Jenny | Jenny your first lichen is probably Parmelia sulcata (was it black underneath?) and your second one is Xanthoria parietina
Are theses WAB images Jenny? The reason I ask is that I don't really have the time or the expertise to ID other website images.
There are good sites on the web for lichen using Google

Regards - John | After I have identified something, I look on WAB to see if there is already a good image in the Gallery. If not, I upload mine. Most of the images in the Gallery are far better quality than mine so I only try to fill in the gaps.
I am pretty good at identifying things like flowers and trees but I am new to fungi and even newer to lichen so I really don't know where to start with ID's. So many of them look so alike that I can go off in a completely wrong direction.
Please don't feel obliged to respond to any of my posts.
