Either Dolichovespula media or D. sylvestris, as you mention it was quite big, and also the black(ish) bands are wide on most segments, I'd go for the former, although I can only see two spots on the thorax rather than the requisite four. |

Its D. media. The 'Nike' shoulder flashes and the very dark abdomen are sure fire signs that point to D. media. |  | |
