Ichneumon wasp ?

Found this odd looking thing sitting on my car yeaterday - about 6mm body length. Think it's an Ichneumon wasp but it also seemed to look a bit like a flying ant.

Re: Ichneumon wasp ?

I can see where you-re coming from with thinking it's an Ichneumon, particularly the raised scutellum between the wings where they cross over.

LC - Is it just a Lasius niger or another flying ant sp.?

Re: Ichneumon wasp ?

I don't think that L. niger and L. platythorax can be done from males.

Re: Ichneumon wasp ?

Well that explains why it looks odd but a bit strange to find a lone flying ant at this time of year ?

Re: Ichneumon wasp ?

The antenna dont look to be elbowed in the correct place to be an ant.

Having looked at it more carfully, do ants have 15 antennal segment?.

Re: Ichneumon wasp ?

I first thought possibly a member of the Tiphiidae. I dont think ants have 15 segments to the antenna. Although there not really my field.

Re: Ichneumon wasp ?

I believe ants in the UK have 10-13 antennal segments. This looks more waspy to me - especially the waist area, although I agree it's slightly unclear whether it's a continuous narrow waist or a pair of nodes.
