| | | Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed As if tracking them down were not difficult enough in the first place, getting them to pose for a photo is nearly impossible. What you need is some kind of stun gun so that you can zap them from a distance to induce temporary paralysis. |

| | | Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed I have pictures of Glanville Fritillary & Duke of Burgundy as well as Black-veined White caterpillars - would it be worth me uploading them? They could always be deleted when native pictures have been uploaded by someone. Let me know if you want me to go ahead.

| | | Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed Just a suggestion but it would be great if there were also pics of each species with wings open and wings closed. This could also help members with ID's. I'm happy to contribute whatever I can. Good luck with the project. |

| | | Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed Hi Stu,
I posted a photo of a white butterfly in my gallery and also in the forum today. One of the WAB members thinks it is a Wood White. I looked up this species and it only appears in the Burren part of Ireland. As I took it locally in Newtownabbey, it could be a Real's Wood White. I'd value your opinion as you need a pic of this butterfly for your encyclopaedia.
Thanks.

| | | Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed I have only just spotted this thread. I'm sure I have a photo of a Monarch (taken in Spain). When I get home tonight I will try and sort one out for the gallery. (I'm just hoping that it isn't one of the photos lost in the Burglary last year).

jdoherty | Hi jdoherty,
I believe I was the member that i.d. it as Wood White.
I've just had a look at the Millennium Butterfly Atlas, Asher et al, and the Wood White is widespread from the top of Northern Ireland to the south of Eire. In fact there appears to be more records from Ireland than England and given scarcity of recorders in Ireland the Wood White will be well under recorded. Given that, there are some areas in Ireland without records but it has a very good general distribution in the two Irish countries.
I also have found Newtonabbey on an atlas and compared it with the butterfly Millennium Atlas and there are 6 10km squares where the butterfly has been recorded around or in the Newtonabbey/Belfast area.
Futher 'googling' shows that Real's Wood White is found in Eire and Northern Ireland, so I would be 99.9% happy that yours is a Real's but the only way to truly tell is disect its genitals
Cheers
