Here are the Monarch butterfly images I promised. Photographed in Spain last year.

In fact there appears to be more records from Ireland than England and given scarcity of recorders in Ireland the Wood White will be well under recorded. Given that, there are some areas in Ireland without records but it has a very good general distribution in the two Irish countries.

I also have found Newtonabbey on an atlas and compared it with the butterfly Millennium Atlas and there are 6 10km squares where the butterfly has been recorded around or in the Newtonabbey/Belfast area.

Futher 'googling' shows that Real's Wood White is found in Eire and Northern Ireland, so I would be 99.9% happy that yours is a Real's but the only way to truly tell is disect its genitals

Cheers

Many thanks Aeshna for the original ID and the subsequent detailed information about the Real's Wood White in Ireland.

Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed

I can post quite a few of the species pictures, but not many of them were taken in Britain, I hope that's alright.

Most of the time this should be fine, but be careful that your pictures are not of a different subspecies/form that is not found in Britain.

Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed

I'm a newcomer but, encouraged by the guarded permission to post pix of "foreigners", I am attaching a rather poor shot of a yellow butterfly snapped in the gardens at Versailles, France late in September. My initial view was that it was a Brimstone but that now seems wrong. Any help with ID will be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation!

Hindpool

Either Pale Clouded Yellow or Berger's Clouded Yellow. It is not easy to tell them apart. I will leave that for someone else to take a shot at it.

Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed

Thanks DL. This shot was also posted elsewhere in BWF (it was my first post and I was a bit confused about how and where to post piccies) and Clouded Yellow seems to be the consensus.

It's a Puss Moth (Cerura vinula) larva that, judging by its colour, is wandering around looking for a suitable pupation site where it can build its cocoon and pupate.

I uploaded these two Geranium Bronze photos three days ago but don't see them yet. Is there a problem? Where they received? (They look oooo here because they're compressed)

Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed

I've just loaded a few butterfly pics up for ya!

There's pics of the underwings of the Comma showing the white 'c', a Small Copper and a Red Admiral.

The Speckled Wood pic is interesting as I didn't even know that their wings were fluted like that!

Also got a super shot yesterday of Meadow Brown's mating!

Hope they're of some use

Arrow How To Upload...

Hi,

I'm new to these forums. I was just wondering how I can upload any butterfly pics you may need - what species do you need more of and what size?

Take care,
Jason

Hi Jason and welcome to WAB,
To upload your shots try following this video guide.
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/wi...images_gallery
From having a quick look in the gallery, I think that now we're only missing:

Berger's Clouded Yellow
Large Chequered Skipper
Mazarine Blue

So if you've any shots of those rarities that would be useful. Otherwise though I'm sure that any of your butterfly shots would be welcome because it's always useful to have a variety of shots of each species.
Guy

Hi Aeshna,

The update to the atlas - "The State of Butterflies in Britain and Ireland" shows that the Wood White is generally confined to the Burren pretty much. Real's Wood White is by far the more widespread of the two. This has all been determined by examining museum records.

However, the atlas also says that the distribution should be the subject of more research

Cheers,

- Pete

Re: More Butterfly Pics Needed

I have posted two pictures of a Queen of Spain Fritillary in my gallery taken here in Hampshire, England, but I cannot tell you which they are, because I am not allowed to show you them, because I have not posted sufficient items. However, the addresses are http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...itillary01.jpg and http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...itillary06.jpg.
