Re: Flying ant day 2008

No flying ants for me yet .... and I am higher up than most of you living in a second floor flat .

In fact, I can not remember the last time I saw this. When I was a kid, swarms of flying ants and the flocks of gulls feeding on them was a regular summer event.

Re: Flying ant day 2008

The ones in my garden haven't flown yet but down the main road they are emerging from several colonies inside a wall!

Re: Flying ant day 2008

Strangely enough, the ants are just (today), erruping from the ground in their nuptial flights in Rhode Island, USA also so I've been told.
Awwww.... 'tis a small world eh, grapple fans.

And still I have a colony in the rockery with winged ants .... perhaps they've decided not to move?

Re: Flying ant day 2008

Those pictures are great. I saw large numbers of gulls in Bristol last month when there was a small eruption. Out of interest did you or anyone else video the last emergence?

Re: Flying ant day 2008

The garden ones didn't fly until 30th August - same time as some other populations in this area. I'm rather surprised that they're so out of sync - or are they different species? Need to examine a few, obviously
