Re: Dragonfly ID please

I'm afraid you're wrong- it's not even a hawker! It's a Common Darter.

Re: Dragonfly ID please

I agree with common darter.

The yellow (not orange-red) colouration of the body suggests a female, but I'm not entirely sure because - I don't know what an immature dragonfly would look like.

I don't think it is a ruddy darter because I can see yellow on the legs (in Sympetrum sanguineum they are black).

Well.... to me it looks like a female Southern Hawker, but as I'm really just starting to learn about these wonderful insects, I'd best wait until someone more knowledgeable on the odonates finds this thread Vole Woman!

I agree with TBR, female because of the lack of a "waist".

Re: Dragonfly ID please

Two lovely photos posted I know zilch about dragonflies, so this is fast becoming a new interest. Armed with a good guide book (I have many) I can look up the photos that are posted and learn a bit more. Everbody seems so good at photography and I'm so glad they are, because people like me really appreciate seeing them

Re: Dragonfly ID please

Thank you! I agree, they're amazing to look at when you manage to get a good close-up view of them.

I think it's an immature male, after inspecting the anal appendages.
