| | | Re: [ID] Beetle Yes, it's Notiophilus, I can't confirm which species (although N. biguttatus is the one most frequently encountered). There have been discussions previously on WAB about Notiophilus, so may be worth a search through the forum.
Cheers,
Martin

| | | Re: [ID] Beetle Yes, it's either Notiophilus biguttatus or N. substriatus - in the latter the outer intervals of the elytra are dull (due to microsculpture) in contrast to the shiny wide central one. You need to get the light just right to see that I'm afraid .... As Martin noted, N. biguttatus is the most common species outside of woods. |

| | | Re: [ID] Beetle That rings a bell now, i think i have found one of these before and it was biguttatus , if my memory serves me correctly .

| | | Re: [ID] Beetle The other character that separates the two species is the depth of striae on the elytra, which is deeper in biguttatus. Not a terrific character if you haven't got anything to compare against. It looks pretty deep but....The head and sinuate thorax rules ou quadripunctatus (which is in the same key couplet in Luff).

| | | Re: [ID] Beetle This really is an excellent photo - super head and great texture. It really conveys a sense of weight and three dimensionality.
I find beetles just about the most difficult to capture well and would just love to bag something like this.

| | | Re: [ID] Beetle I find it's not so much beetles in generally but ground beetles (Carabidae) in particular: they're mainly dull brown or black things which aren't easy to focus on. They're often shiny so that you get reflections obscuring the detail. They tend to be nocturnal and always run off towards shade if you uncover them ... so yes, it's nice to see a good picture now and then! Quote:

| | | Re: [ID] Beetle Its virtually impossible to get this type of shot in the field, they have a serious aversion to light, and wont stop running until they get out of it.
Thats why i place them into a stone in the middle of a water bater bath ... | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
