Help - huge flying insect

I don't know if anyone can help, but a huge flying insect came into my room this evening. It was approx 4-5cms lonf, oval in shape and made only what I can describe as a "whirring" noise. I think it was mainly brown, and seemed to have a hard shell. I have a very bad photo that I took on my mobile, but just wanted it out of my room! I have never seen anything like it before, and am living in Guernsey. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?
Thanks

Welcome to Wild About Britain catherines, Sounds like a Beetle of some sort, have a look at May Bug also called a Cockchafer they are about now, failing that post your picture and someone will probably be able to ID it.

Re: Help - huge flying insect

Thank you - this does fit the description! Good to know it's harmless - my friend and I had a fright when it flew in. Funnily enough, I had problems with my lawn back in England with these fellas.

Re: Help - huge flying insect

Just had one in my living room. Fabulous creature! My son was completely traumatised as he thought it was a demon-possessed moth. I've never had the pleasure to see one close up before.
