| | | Woodlouse ID (I've put this in the Insects Forum as we don't seem to have a general Invertebrates Forum)
Can anyone confirm the ID of this Woodlouse please? I thought it must be Porcellio scaber but have now realised there are several plausible alternatives. It was small, around 8mm. Taken in Leicestershire.

| | | Re: Woodlouse ID It certainly looks like Porcellio scaber, which is very common, but I can't remember my ID features, and the key isn't with me! It's far too 'warty' to be Oniscus asellus, which is quite smooth.

| | | Re: Woodlouse ID Think it could be Porcelio spinicornis, looking at the AIDGAP key to woodlice. It does also mention a superficial similarity to Oniscus asellus that Laurence mentions, but differs.in pleopods + number of lungs (obviously not visible in photo). |

In view of the transverse ridge across each segment of the pereon, I would suggest Porcellionides cingendus.
Nice images

| | | Re: Woodlouse ID thanks Les and Aeshna. There's still no real consensus so it's difficult to know which is right. Perhaps I'll wait and see if I get 2 votes for the same species before I change the titles in the Gallery

| | | Re: Woodlouse ID I was quickly browsing through woodlouse guide earlier for one of my own projects, but I realise my earlier suggestion is incorrect as P.spinicornis has a black head which contrasts with rest of the body, otherwise superficially similar. Looking at Les' suggestion of P.cingendus I think this is the correct ID- some concensus?! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
