| | Snow flea? Hi all,
I've been trying to spot one, a snow flea (the antifreeze springtail, Boreus hyemalis) for over a year - have I got lucky? - I think it looks right, but grateful for views on these pics - sorry about quality it was grey and misty and no macro lens or tripod with me.
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: Snow flea? I'm afraid I don't think so Ken - this looks much more like a Collembola or Springtail than a relative of the scorpion flies. Though they do share some characters - notably an element of antifreeze in their blood.
Sorry ! At least you're better placed to succeed than I - they don't seem to be very common in the South West, which is a shame as I'd really like to see one myself.
Cheers,
Matt

| | | Re: Snow flea? Phew! No, 'fraid not - Springtail. A while back me and a couple of other WAB regulars said we'd love to see one. This must mean then the game is still on for being first! |

I gather scottish highlands etc are better places to look and pitfall traps are the usual way they are found. |

| | | Re: Snow flea? Very funny Neil, yep, they are that tiny.........
Damn, thought I might have it - I did realise the apparent lack of Scorpionfly beak was an issue.................
Oh well, must keep looking.
I posted on that thread last year too Jason, so I know what you mean, we'll both have to keep trying harder!
Cheers everyone.

Ken | Well.. I guess you could claim a sort of half victory, the rather confused naturalists from over the pond do call some species of collembula "snow-fleas".
C'mon wabbers.. nows the time to find the real snow flea !
Cheers,
Matt
