| | where will the Beetles go ? They are going to build lots of houses on the field where I walk my dog. There are thousands of what look like devils coach horse Beatles on the field.. Where will they go when the field is houses. Will they die or find somewhere else to live. Where will all the wildlife go when the hole countryside is filled up with houses. Where will it all end. |

| | | Re: where will the Beatles go ? Very good question.
Some will fly away - staphylinids, rove beetles are very good flyers so can escape ... but will they find anywhere to live.
One of the critical points about UK conservation policy is that it does not involve any consideration of wildlife corridors - especially North-South ones. These are very useful for animals to escape from built areas but especially they are essential to allow animals (and, indeed, plants) to shift North if/when the climate warms up ... |

only you can tell them otherwise, if they will listen

People may be living on the outside of a village with fields and woods to walk through but a couple of years later they're surrounded by houses and commercial developments and nowhere to walk at all! JB | Yes, at the moment we walk the dog for two hours across fields that we have just found out in the local press that they are earmarked for housing. This includes about four wooded areas that the Buzzards have recently moved into. We live in Towcester and we are surrounded by farmland. They are going to double the size of the town. I feel depressed at what we are going to loose all the wildlife and the wonderful place it is at the moment. There are Hares on these fields they will just disappear and become scarce. you can't bring it back when its gone. |

Didn't South Northants Council put out any sort of public consultation? Worth asking if the consultation period is up or whether you can still complain. I've seen this sort of thing before. Most councils in the south Midlands are being pressurised into allowing developments - a few, such as Dunstable, are resisting - worth getting onto your councillors? At least they should be ensuring that there is access to the country for those who are being imprisoned! I've seen some Towcester developments - in the tonw itself - pretty intensive with no gardens just a few car parking spaces ... sad. |

Where will it all end. | Kayleigh. I'm going through the same thoughts as you at the moment. Living in North Kent is just as awful. We had to watch hundreds of metres of hedges and ancient trees being removed just because they want to move a motorway about 50 metres south!! It's horribly upsetting and I do feel for you.
The only thing to keep yourself uplifted with is the fact that there are lots of us around(including all those here on WAB) who really do care about the environment and have the enthusiasm and commitment to wildlife which will eventually get through to the planners and councils.
Lets face it, through retirements and better education, one day there may be people who plan with wildlife corridors in mind, houses that collect their own water supply, etc.
I think the key is to arouse folks interest in their own immediate environment. Some folk may not even be aware that there's a SSSI on their doorstep.
I do, for instance, see much more reptile mitigation fencing being used before a project gets going. I never saw this before, they'd just come in with the diggers and wipe out a whole habitat. So someone somewhere must be getting the message.
In the meantime, keep up your interest in wildlife and set others alight with your enthusiasm for it...it does pay off.
