I really don't have much of a clue about this thing - it was given to me from an ecologist who found it in freshwater in NE Scotland and it's about 2.5mm long 
I'd appreciate even a rough idea as to what it is...

Looks like a good call by Dogghound, perhaps something like Newsteadia flocculosa (Orthezidae). |

after much searching -> Ensign Scale - Arctorthezia sp. seems to look hopeful

Ah. Admittedly I did only run a quick search on NBN for it, but there was no return for either that genus or the binominal. Interesting FE would have it. |

I'm not sure if NBN does coccids: they're certainly a pain to record in MapMate!
Newstead's monograph is available online, but it is 110 odd years out-of-date. |

Ensign scale certainly includes UK species - it's a group I'd quite like to get into one day, but they're very hard work due to the scarcity of ID materials... At least foreign taxa coming into the UK are studied by Chris Malumphy at Fera, however, and I think he knows a lot about the natives too. | | | |
