ID for odd looking white insect

thanks for all this useful information - I've been having a look on the web and it's not an easy group to get information about re ID. As Jason points out there's no mention of these poor beasts on NBN at all. We need someone to start a 'scale insects-r-us' website in the UK! hmmm....

A paper on scales in Bedfordshire by Chris Malumphy is a useful place for learning about some of the more obvious common species. The BNHS site has some illustrations too.

Here is one i found on fungi end of last year in a devon wood.
The marker in the background is 5mm.
Looks very similar to Iains.
