| | | Re: Worlds Biggest Insect Thanks Janet, I read that in the Metro ( free London commuter's paper) early this morning on the way in to work. Fascinating-looking thing, such a shame it's rather rare.
It kind of reminds me of holding a carrot for my little bun, 'Snuggles'! |

| | | Re: Worlds Biggest Insect The Jungle Nymph ( Heteropteryx dilatata) is very large and I thought it was claimed to be the largest insect in the World: Jungle Nymph - Heteropteryx dilatata | Keeping Insects
I had one for a couple of years. Whilst quite spectacular, they don't do much except eat (bramble). They can be handled, but the spines on their legs are every sharp and can give you a nasty cut.

| | | Re: Worlds Biggest Insect She's a beauty! Must have good eyesight after the carrot!! I've never heard or seen anything about these or the Jungle nymph before - very interesting.

| | | Re: Worlds Biggest Insect I used to look after Jungle Nymphs when I worked at the NHM for a while - they're fabulous. Cleaning out their cage was fun, mind - they'd be crawling up your arm as you were doing it, and they have very sharp claws...
Their defense mechanism is to snap their spiny femora together when your finger is between... and I can assure you it's effective. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
