Stony Stratford, Bucks. The hoverfly larva is carnivorous so maybe not the safest place to hide. Interesting to note the similarity in colouring though?

I'd go for a very small woodlouse - they do just tend to crawl under anything available for shelter! |

Interesting Paul I would'nt have thought of woodlouse - but I can definitely see what you mean. I had a look at the AIDGAP key but to be honest I'm useless at following keys - and maybe there's just not enough of the animal showing.

It looks like a Dustywing larva to me, I got one on the 1st. It was under a Camellia leaf where I also get Barkfly eggs, look at the photo on this site.. Neuroptera/Lacewings and Kin a set by Cheryl Moorehead

That's right Bruce, it was a tiny orange one with white spots at the sides I think! At a younger stage I would say.. I had one which was ~1.5mm last year. Dustywings - Coniopterygidae Photo Gallery by Tom Murray at pbase.com
