Its around 1cm long from head to tip of wings, with speckled wings...

| | | Re: Identify this insect Thanks Rhona, these tend to sit still for you. The male was on Ivy, female on the door inside. It's all a matter of pratice using manual settings, easy when you know how!  A good lens and teleconverter helps, these teensy insects are big to me by comparison now!

| | | Re: Identify this insect The fly is from the Anisopodidae family, often described as 'Window Gnats'. The wing-venation should help get to genus (the 'Anisopus' or 'Sylvicola' part), and genital examination for full species-level (i.e.: Sylvicola fenestralis, our most common).
I don't think these can be fully-done photographically.
