Ants .... a shortage?

I had occasion to crawl about my lawn and borders several times in the last couple of months and where I would have expected to have either Black Ants or Red Ants all over my arms there have been none. This garden has up till now had several large ants nests and visits from Green Woodpeckers, any ideas as to why they may have gone? The garden is run as wildlife friendly.

I was just thinking the same thing about there being a lack of spiders this year, I wonder if the bad winter last year has effected ant and spider populations?

There is a narrow border under the front window which normaly has a lot of ant activity,even getting in the front room.This year none seen.
