| | | Re: Small hopper for ID But when they are 'on the move' - not sure how far hoppers will travel, say in one day - they must have to land/rest on any convenient plant. I did a quick detour yesterday into the herb garden in the local park and there these were on all three of the sages, but apart from the physic garden just across the Thames I've have no idea where the nearest sage would be.

| | | Re: Small hopper for ID It's certainly true that you find individual hoppers in unexpected places, and I've always thought that they must be just passing through. Not sure how far they can fly in one go, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a very long way. Zyginella pulchra colonised most of England in about 5 years, and that's in terms of establishing populations, rather than just individual flights. I suspect if something that small gets up high enough, with a following wind, it could travel the length of the country in a day. |

| | | Re: Small hopper for ID Interesting - I wish they could be fitted with transmitters like birds and sea creatures to see how far they travel.
I get all sorts of bugs, hoppers, moths etc outside my windows and I'm in a sixth floor flat - I've assumed they they get swept up round the building when the wind creates a vortex. I have wondered quite how high they go, but don't know anyone 'further up' to ask (plus I don't want the Pest Control called in!)
I did this recently so thought I'd add it to show the variety

| | | Re: Small hopper for ID I get lots of those - inside too. They spend hours wandering round the light shades and this one was watching WAB on my Pc screen...
( I try to get them to go back outside, otherwise they don't survive.)
