Huge Dragonfly

Hello,

Today a massive (and I mean massive) dragonfly flew in to the house. I was working upstairs and heard a banging on the window, and thought a bird had got in - I couldn't believe it when I saw a dragonfly about the size of a sparrow!

It was throwing itself at the window, I had to get a neighbour to each up and open the window as it's in an awkward place, and eventually it darted for freedom.

It was bright green - does anyone have any idea which sort of dragonfly it was?
It's the second creature I've seen in 2 weeks that surprised me - I nearly ran over a snake the other day and asked on this forum again for identification!

2 species come to mind. Female Emperor Dragonfly or female Southern Hawker.
A Female emperor dragonly (Largest ) fits discription although very unlikely as they usually dont fly this late as far as i am aware. Female southern hawker is both green and brown and may be your dragonfly.The most common large dragonfly on the wing at this time of year is the Migrant hawker although this species is smaller than the previous mentioned .

Given the time of year I would say most likely a Southern Hawker+ these are regularly found in gardens as they like sunny wooded glades which gardens often approximate to.

From the description it's impossible to be 100% about the species.

I think you are right it was a southern hawker - I just googled it.
