Hoverfly strange behaviour
not in UK but the species I think is Eristalinus aeneus. Anyway it was carrying a tiny stone in flight and after landing took off with it again until it finally left it on the fence probably due to me photographing it. It would have been salty as it was on a beach in Sardinia so i'm wondering do they 'lick' rock for salt, but then why carry it away?
