Just a thought - have got lots of these flying into the house, much to the delight of the cats! What do the adult craneflies eat? They live for days indoors, and unless I can get them to go out again they die on the windowsills.

I think some feed on nectar, and some don't eat at all.

That explains it! I've never seen one eating nectar, and there isn't any in the house. Still wondering why they have such long legs - and yet manage to fly around without damaging them. Must be a good year for leatherjackets.
