| | | Wasp like insect? Hello, my father was stung by a wasp like insect and we want to know what it is!
It's about 1.5" long (4cms), thin, black, very shiny, a point (about 0.5 inches long) out of its abdomen, long black and yellow striped antennae, transparent, long thin wings (not sure if there were veins in the wings). The thing that has puzzled us the most is that it was silent, there was no buzzing like the average wasp.
Let me know guys and girls |

| | | Re: Wasp like insect? It sounds like an ichneumon wasp. If so, the extension on its tail was an ovipositor, not a sting. There are many different ones so a photo would help, or look up in the Gallery.

| | | Re: Wasp like insect? He says that this is the closest he has seen of it. It's not an ichneumon wasp as we see those regularly. Those hurt too though! |

| | | Re: Wasp like insect? Actually, that is an ichneumon. There are a lot of different species, including some that look quite different from each other. The ovipositor can indeed be used in defense, but there's no venom - it's just like stabbing you with a needle. |

| | | Re: Wasp like insect? Well, well, well... so it is. I thought it was in the Ichneumonoidea, but Evanioidea it is. In case no-one's ever mentioned it, there are far too many different wasps. Thanks for the correction. |

| | | Re: Wasp like insect? Evanoidea, is it? I'd never looked, so thanks too! Off-hand I think Ichneumonoidea is only Iches and Bracs.
Coincidentally I think the family of jaculator has changed. Something like Gasteruptionidae to Gasteruptiidae or vice-versa. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
