I know Geoff F will say I shld buy Stubbs, and I do have it on my hit list promise, but in the meantime please cld someone say if apparently ginger hairs on the hind legs, diminutive size and relatively small versions of the V marks on the abdomen mean anything, or just a malnourished E. tenax, please?!  |

The all dark inflated hind legs are the clue here to E. tenax.
Some can have a lot of orange, others none. A malnourished one would be small, OK I know you're joking! 
It took me a few years to get a book of keys. You can get some from diptera.info, Paul has put a link above the shout box to Syrph the Net. They are a little different, all are different but I tend to now check it as well if in doubt but Platycheirus is not listed.

Thanks Janet! It's so good to get a conclusion! And I'm glad it's OK to take a while to build to getting Stubbs!
I've been all over looking for what might be a shout box, and have searched for 'Syrph the Net', and tried a tiny Links button right at the bottom which goes nowhere...
so please can you tell me how to do that?! |

Look in the right side column on the home page where people post comments. Go up from that and you will see it.

I'm feeling very elderly! I go to the Forums home page (because I can't see any postings at all on the main Home page?) and I can see Online Users, WAB Dev Posts, New Wildlife Posts, etc - and above all these are Featured Gallery Pics. But nowhere anything saying Syrph the Net. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh dear?! |
