| | | miwyuns o'beetles & beetly things for ident. 1 - appears to be a 'rhino' type beetle; it has a nose horn. Found on Tadley Common, heathland.
2 - very bright scarlet, found on nettles on the edge of an oilseed rape field in full bloom.
3 - found in leaf litter beneath a large conifer in my garden.
4 - black head, brown wing casing; found in/on soil and ash of firesite (not a good picture, I know).
5 - found lumbering happily across the flagstone of my patio.
6 - found in a log pile; seems very active and aggressive when roused.
7 - was actually more dark green all over than is evident in the photo.
8 - not sure about this one, and the awful photo doesn't help; found it 'bark creeping' on established ivy-draped hazel (I think), inside a hedgerow.

No 3 - a Carabid female full of eggs
No 4 - A click beetle - probably Athous haemorridalis
No 5 - Lesser Stag Beetle
No 6 - A Rove Beetle (Staphyinidae - not Devils Coach-horse Ocypus olens though - wrong shape)
No 7 - Click beetle - possibly Ctenicera cuprea
No 8 - pass.

| | | Re: miwyuns o'beetles & beetly things for ident. Yes, 3 is carabid and looks like a Pterostichus but not Pt. madidus. The old old question, how long was it? |
