| | A bundle of insects for ID Hello folks,
I am looking back at some photos taken I think at the end of July? In Norfolk.
If you can please help with some IDs!
1: I know this guy may be impossible to identify it was small, also wondering what it is doing to the leaf, is it eating something?
2: I thought this moth was quite lovely to look at, I love the wavy white stripe all down its back and antennae. Also rather small in size.
3:
4: This guy was odd looking, not sure what to call it.
5: A fly of some kind.
6: And another fly.
If you need other information such as environment, sizes or other photo angles please say.
Thank you for looking!

| | | Re: A bundle of insects for ID I'm gonna stick my neck out and guess a few:
1 - Ichneumonidae wasp
2 - a moth
3 - Oulema melanopa
4 - Maybe a Soldier-fly of some sort?
5 - A Tachinidae?
6 - A Sarcophagidae
Someone will correct and complete IDs no doubt!

| | | Re: A bundle of insects for ID Agree with Nigel for 1 and Johnny for 2. I can't say more than Oulema for the beetle - needs genitalic-identification. To follow, we have Stratiomyidae (is it Chloromyia or Sargus?), Muscidae (needs bristle-work) and Anthomyiidae (genitalic jobs). |

| | | Re: A bundle of insects for ID I think it was only fairly-recently split. Which book is this? I didn't think it was the typical-type that would get a mention - well, that is unless it comes under the 'Cereal Leaf Beetle' tag I suppose. |

Still wondering about #4, but some lovely answers here for the rest.
oo looking at my blurry back picture of #4 it reminded me of another fly I photographed before.
4: photo from behind. Microchrysa polita:
So would I be right in guessing my number 4 is a female Microchrysa polita?

| | | Re: A bundle of insects for ID The wings on #4 look more like Chloromyia formosa but I can't say for sure.
#5 female Muscidae, possible Phaonia sp. but can't see enough detail to be sure.
#6 Anthomyiidae male, looks like Hylemya vagans but there's others similar. These need close scrutiny.
