Royal Entomological Society Book of British Insects.

It looks superb .........I have some birthday money left so I just had to......

I'll be very interested to see what this looks like. A family level overview, particularly if it says something more about the biology than is usual in a field guide, is definitely something I'd like to have.

I'm going to piggy back on this thread as I'm aware of another book due out shortly a photo guide to British Plant Galls compiled by Michael Chinery. This is published by WildGuides, but is the culmination of a long-standing initiative of the British Plant Gall Society (disclosure: I am a member). I've seen a copy and the photographs and reproduction is excellent: there are some sample pages on the link. As this covers a goodly number (150-200) of the galls most commonly encountered, it may be more appealing than the FSC keys. Certainly the whole reason for the BPGS doing the project is get more people interested in galls. It's not too late to use in the field this year either!

Yes I saw that today. It isn't cheap but if it really covers as much as the advertising blurb suggests, it will be well worth the money.

Did you also see the "proofs" of the wildguides Hoverfly book? That also looks very good.

No- just the gall one. Thought the book would go down well with you Roy.
