Wasp-like Insect needing an ID
I saw this evil/beautiful looking wasp/fly outside my beehive last week. It spent several minutes sizing up the beehive, but then left.

The piece of plywood that it's resting on is 18mm wide - gives some sort of scale for it.



It spent some time hovering in front of the hive, so i'm half expecting a "its a Hoverfly" type response, but i've never seen anything like it before.

Its a Hoverfly Volucella zonaria.

hi welcome to WAB it is a hornet mimic hoverfly (Volucella zonaria) i think

whilst it was hovering in front of the hive, it reallly looked like it was thinking of taking the whole hive on - really threatening
