Fly's a Tephritid. | The fly is indeed a tephritid and both photos have lots of detail of the chaetotaxy so it ought to be possible to get some way to a precise ID. The various bristles on the top of the head and along the edge of the eye are nice and clear. 3 pairs frontal setae, pair of ocellar setae, can't make my mind up if there are 1 or 2 pairs of post orbital bristles (if the posterior pair exist they are light coloured).
Unfortunately there's not a huge amount of information about the wing pattern. Although it looks to me that the apex of the wing is not coloured, and that there are two large hyaline areas in cell R1.
An idea of the plant it is sitting on might make life a bit easier. |

Unfortunately I've been looking at Merz which a) shows the wing pattern as extremely faint and b) says "in ... England sehr selten". However, 2008 maps from Laurence Clemons show quite a few records as far N as the Humber, with a good cluster post-2000 in Hampshire. So I think this seems a decent fit.
