| | | Every grasshopper has a silver bonnet Yes, I've finally cracked today. We went out to St Albans to send my bins on a nice, long European holiday (for the first time in years I'm noccie-less (and depressed )). On the way back a creature landed on the car bonnet. I took a quick snap and saw that it was a grasshopper.
Then a few miles later, lo and behold, another one fell on top of my head almost.
It did cheer me up, I have to admit.
I'm having a little trouble with ID, but I assume from wing length, suggestion of a costal bulge and obvious abundance in numbers, that these might be Field Grasshoppers. The pics are taken through glass, so maybe the hairy thorax will not show so well.
Any ideas?
Since I had a great opportunity to get a bum shot, can the one in close up be sexed?
Thanks as always.

| | | Re: Every grasshopper has a silver bonnet Your titchhiker probably is a Field Grasshopper Deb,as for having a silver bonnet I would advise it to wear something not as flimsy as a silver bonnet and would recommend something much more substantial than cloth, like a crash helmet,a bonnet is pretty ineffectual for such hazardous activity!

| | | Re: Every grasshopper has a silver bonnet Thanks for your opinion Jason.
A bonnet is largely lady's garment, and a crash helmet largely a gentleman's. So are we suggesting that this is a male Field Grasshopper?
I thought female, but there is such a small difference in the rear end that you could well be right.

I reasoned that it would be a Field Grasshopper though because they are strong fliers, and are more capable of getting up onto cars.Sometimes I bet they jump on the other end of the car, they call these jumping boots.soz
Jason.

Jason. | I think you'll find that's what the jump leads are for!
