Crane-Fly ID Check
Colouring seems odd but looks like Tipula oleracea, just emerged??

Could be a teneral Nephrotoma - wouldn't like to do it photographically. What made you think oleracea?

Hi Jason,

About the only book reference I have is Chinery "Complete British Insects", of course it is not complete!

Going by the wings gave me T. oleraca or T. Paludosa, the image of Nephrotoma were not good for the wings. I did wonder if the faint marks were developing spots of Nephrotoma though. Very basic, but them I am!

The colour of the thorax is not right but if it is teneral?
It was very reluctant to fly off.

Of course I would like to find out, never seen one like this before.
I can always put possibly in front.
