Beetle for id please
Hi,

I think this is a carabus sp., but not sure which. Any ideas?

Hello
I would say Pterostichus niger which is a fairly common ground beetle.

Yes, that's quite likely although there are several similar-looking species (e.g. Pterostichus melanarius which might be confused with this level of detail.
What size was it incidentally, a rough idea of length is always useful!

It was a couple of weeks ago now, but I think it was about an inch long.
