Insect colouration variation

Can the type of soil an insect species lives on affect its colouration?

Meaning; can a specimen of species A living on very red clay soil (for e.g.), and a specimen of species A living on dark loam (also for e.g. ) hold the hue of the soil as a colour variation? . . . If species A did actually live on both soil types.

As far as I know local colour variation would be more to do with natural selection over time. If an insect stood out against a soil background it would be more likely to get eaten, I'm not sure how well birds see color so it could be more to do with light or dark shades. Are you looking at any insect in particular?
