| | | Beetle for ID please I found this one in Knapdale Forest a couple of weeks ago. At first I thought it might be the violet ground beetle due to the colour sheen where the light caught it, but I'm sure it isn't. The antennae and pronotum aren't right for starters, plus someone found me a real violet ground beetle a few days later and it's a bigger, sturdier beast altogether. This one was abot 15mm, 20mm at most. When I found it, it appeared to be scavenging the remains of another beetle that looked like it had been trodden on by a previous walker. The weather was very wet so there's a bit of mud, particularly in the close crop on the head...
Any suggestions?

Being found in woodland, I would be more inclined to go with Anoplotrupes stercorosus with this one...
