| | 'British Bugs' and 'Diptera.info' links Evening all,
Just a quick query British Bugs - a very useful tool for both enthusiasts and entomologists. I know that site has had links to it blocked from here. Why then, are so many links to Diptera.info permitted? They appear in almost every post relating to a family of far more British species. I wouldn't want it blocked too, it's equally useful. I'm just a little curious here given the vast number of Diptera.info-related links that seem to be OK, yet BB is blocked.
I think both should be clear to link to, just referrals kept in-check.
Thanks for reading.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: 'British Bugs' and 'Diptera.info' links I quite agree Jason, and if your post is also a petition of some kind, you have my name too.
Let us hope someone can explain why it can not be linked to from WAB. |

It is a valuable website that has enabled me to make a few confident identifications recently. It is also laid out in an excellent easy-to-use format.
Regards,
Andrew. |

| | | Re: 'British Bugs' and 'Diptera.info' links British Bugs is an excellent site and I too would like to be able to link to it if a response to a post indicates that a visit there would help - particularly because Tristan and Joe contribute so much to WAB with their bug ID and other support. |

| | | Re: 'British Bugs' and 'Diptera.info' links "It's easy to cut and paste content into the forum or reference pages, so there should be little need to link to external websites."
which is rather dubious legally
the above statement plus the WAB ownership of uploaded images has put me off uploading any of my reference shots here
if you google a bug name WAB is at the top of the search but 9 times out ten there is no image to support the info supplied
and yet one of the reasons for no external links is to prevent dead links ?
the flickr british bug group and the sister group uk hoppers also run by Joe and Tristan got me into bug hunting and all their help and encouragement has led me into concentrating almost solely on photographing and recording them down here in deepest Dorset I am proud to say that i now have a few images featured on BB and have had a couple of images published in the hopper atlas of Luxembourg
British bugs plus the Kunzweb Gallery and other European specialist sites have been invaluable to me
it is ridiculous that we can not add links to specialist sites to encourage fellow WABBERS to gain more knowledge themselves and that we have to reword text instead of providing a direct link to the source
the greater encouragement made by providing links to external images and more info may well spark someone's interest here to specialise in the obscurer creatures that we come across and in return share their knowledge with others through WAB
I would gladly link all my confirmed bugs shots that are missing from the Gallery but will not give up the rights to my images but see little point in doing so as BB provides them anyway with more in depth info and comparisons to easily confused species
I would like to share some of my flickr images within the forum as i find it a frustratingly slow work flow to process images tag ,manually geotag and label a days field trip for flickr and just haven't got the time and energy to go through the process of uploading here to
I can understand WAB not wanting dead links but i am sure if the odd image was removed by the owner for some reason we could rally round and find an alternative link to replace it for the sake of continuity
you can find me at flickr under the same screen name as here
I have already emailed the admin over this months ago and received no response
I hope the Admin will now grace us with a reply
all the best
and happy snapping
