| | Lowland Heath Wasps for ID Hi All
Lovely and sunny in Dorset today and I've been out on Upton Heath looking for wasps & bees... with a stunning view of Poole harbour in the distance!
Trouble is now I need to try and ID some of the photos I took. HELP! Jane
1 - Very distinctive yellow markings on face and yellow at start of antennae. Stripes on abdomen:
2 - Possible Bee wolf - Philanthus triangulum? Hadn't realised how loud and how big these wasps were - until I got "buzzed" by one because I was in the way!
3. - Possible Ammophila sp.? First two photos are of a different individual than the third photo (taken about 100m apart)
4 - Possible Pompilidae family - Spider Wasp? First photo is a different individual than second & third photos (again about 100m apart). |

| | | Re: Lowland Heath Wasps for ID You know what it's like Nige - you see stuff and you are so excited by it you hope for some confirmation that what you think it "might be" actually "is". Trouble is I know that with all the new posts that are being added at the moment posts can soon slip down onto the 2nd/3rd pages and get missed. Just me being over-excited!

| | | Re: Lowland Heath Wasps for ID Heh I know exactly what you mean! It's frustrating, with stuff in the insects section in particular they slip down quick, but usually people backtrack. If I don't get a response I bump it after a few days.

| | | Re: Lowland Heath Wasps for ID Complete novice speaking here, but I'd guess your first wasp is a digger wasp. The markings on its front end resemble those on the Sand Digger Wasp Mellinus arvensis.
That looks like a fascinating environment.

| | | Re: Lowland Heath Wasps for ID I'd agree with your second one as being Philanthus triangulum, that's if I've got it right for this female at the nest photo'd at a similar angle to yours at the end of July in Sandown:

| | | Re: Lowland Heath Wasps for ID No 1 - Mellinius arvensis - seem to be plenty about at the moment - late summer species.
No 2 - Philanthus.
Last 2 as you suggest, not quite enough detail to get a confident ID on the Ammophila but I am leaning towards A.pubescens. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
