Thumbs up Black flies on Ilkley moor 13th August ID please
Hi
Just really curious but while out walking yesterday (to the twelve apostles on the moor). The whole moor was a swarm of these large black flies. They seemed to be mating and then dying! I thought they were horse flies but have looked it up and their not.
Any ideas's would be appreciated.

Saw swarms of the exact same thing down on Exmoor last Saturday. All over the place over the heather and gorse. My limited research online also led me to believe it is Bibio Pomonae - The Heather Fly.

Definitely Heather Fly, they look very like St Marks Flies in flight, but their red legs and different flight time tell them apart.
