| | | fly ID anyone? few of these flies in the house just now - run about fluttering their wings.
4mm with lots of spines - could it be a rhinophorid? |

| | | Re: fly ID anyone? I got one which looks like yours on 23rd July, it looks like Paykullia maculata.
I got a face view which shows the reddish antennae too but I haven't got around to confirming it. It does look quite distinctive though! I can't remember the size but I think it was a little more than 4mm, maybe 5-6mm?

| | | Re: fly ID anyone? thanks janet - yes they've been around for a month or so and are a bit
more than 4mm I think. Looks very like that Rhinphorid link - the way they
hop around and wing flutter is very distinctive - they can be picked up on
a finger. |

| | | Re: fly ID anyone? The description you give of it running around fluttering it's wings, and the size of 4mm makes me think it could be Sarcophagidae - Nyctia halterata. I had that last year, and it was as you describe. The wing bases look a little too yellow but maybe the calypters are showing through?
Take a look.. mine's the one on the yellow leaf. Diptera.info - Search: Search Results

| | | Re: fly ID anyone? I uploaded my pics. This one just sat on the window so I don't know if it would flutter it's wings. The wings do look like yours.

see if I can compare wings | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
