| | | Re: Could you please help with identification It looks like one of the wasps of the Ichneumonoidea family, probably impossible to tell which exactly from a photo.

| | | Re: Could you please help with identification Many insects that look scary, very often aren't. Some of them use mimicry very well- like the warning colours of nature eg yellow/ black or red/black to frighten off potential predators. Hoverflies are a good example of this. Some have what looks like a huge stinger, which is actually only an ovipositor as in the case of females, which is a piece of equipment that they lay eggs through. However, if you were a caterpillar or larva of some sort, an ovipositor injects the eggs directly into the body, so the larva of the predator grow inside a living larder!
Your insect looks exquisite! What a beauty.

| | | Re: Could you please help with identification Are you in the UK Soulmeister? It looks more colourful than those we usually see here.
There are experts who might be able to help you on the HYMIS forum. Location should be given in order to assist in identification.

| | | Re: Could you please help with identification Afternoon SM, and welcome to WAB!
Try the HyMIS forum - it's come up with the goods in the past. These is however an extremely-difficult group and most of the time you'd need a specimen+microscope+ real expert like those you may find at a premium on said forum.
Great shot, and not one I've seen resembling before.
Take care, Jason | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
