Hoverflies decapitated..

I was in the garden brushing up on my photography when I came across this do you think it was wasp that has done this and why didn't the eat the hoverflies..

Wonder if it was a spider? Is that strands of spider web I can see in the shot Elaine?

This was a spider I'm sure - I had one make threads across one of my dahlia flowers and it caught a bee! (Much bigger than itself.)

Hmmm..... the actual hoverfly bodies don't look like they have been killed by a spider. Spiders wrap their prey up in a fine web then when they feed on it the prey is a black decomposing mass. These look like hoverflies which have been captured in a web then dissected by a wasp feeding its larvae. Wasps usually cut up their prey into sections like these, and commonly raid spider webs. You can only speculate from a photo, but thats my opinion.

Thanks guys it does look like the work of a wasp and there is a spider in the middle of the flower.
