| | | A cricket and a Grasshopper for id please Would someone be kind enough to id these two please.
Also any advice on a book for identifying crickets and grasshoppers as i am finding myself wanting to photograph them and rather than making others id them for me i could give it a shot myself.
Thank you |

| | | Re: A cricket and a Grasshopper for id please After consulting the book for a double check (Grasshoppers & Crickets of Britain and Ireland by Evans & Edmondson) I'm still not sure from those camera angles.
I would suspect that the cricket is a Long-winged Conehead (Conocephalus discolor) but I recently found a long winged version of the Short-winged Conehopper, which does occasionally happen. Easier to tell the females apart than these males.
And I don't really want to give any firm suggestions to the grasshopper. All I will say is that it looks a bit hairy underneath so my first consideration would be Field Grasshopper (Chorthippus brunneus)
But that is a passing thought and not a firm identification. |

| | | Re: A cricket and a Grasshopper for id please I may have an over head shot of the cricket if that would help. I will see if i did get one and post it up.
Thank you for your comments and the mention of the book. |

| | | Re: A cricket and a Grasshopper for id please Definitely separating these male crickets needs a very close shot of the genitalia (cerci) and then a knowledgeable person.
Long-winged Conehead is the most likely, but I'm not sufficiently experienced to say absolutely certainly. |
