I think this is a type of fly?

Is this a fly if so what would it be called and would it bite me?
I was in a nature reserve this morning and this little guy landed on me. Some time later in a different part of the reserve i felt a sharp sting in my ankle and swiped away what ever was hurting me before getting a really good look at the offender. However it did look like this guy.
Any comments much appreciated.

It looks like a Horse Fly to me. I'm sure someone with more experience will reply soon.

If it is, yes, it bites nicely.

Ah, i dismissed horse fly because of the size of it, i always thought horse flies were big blighters however i guess they have to start out small and get bigger.

I would say he is the culprit called a horsefly ouch only the females that bite you
