Clegs in Scotland

Hi,
By Clegs I mean horse flys; and they are nasty critters, just got back from 2 weeks in west highlands near Oban and this year they are everywhere!!

My wife and I were jumping and slappin'

Anyone got any good ideas for avoiding, apart from a suit of armour!

I react quite badly to some cleg bites, needing antihistamines and antibiotics to sort them out sometimes. I've used an insect repellent called "Stop Bite" which is made by a Scottish company using Bog Myrtle, and I've found it does put off the clegs from biting me.

The downside is that it also repels butterflies, moths and dragonflies which I quite often want to see, so it can be difficult to get the balance right.

Another thing that I've heard puts off clegs is to drink Indian tonic water, but only the types with Quinine added. Revolting stuff on its own and I'm not too keen on Gin.
